Through the ages, women have sought to enhance their natural beauty through cosmetics – as much for their own self-image as to attract the opposite sex. In the 20th century, a new “cosmetic” was introduced in the form of aesthetic plastic surgery. From facelifts to breast augmentations, women have embraced plastic surgery as a way of self-improvement.
“You want to do what?”
One of the fastest-growing plastic surgery procedures is vaginal rejuvenation. Although growing in popularity, the term is still mystifying to some. What exactly is it? And why would you do that? Vaginal rejuvenation is a surgical altering of the feminine genitalia. It includes vaginoplasty (tightening of the vagina) and labiaplasty (reshaping of the labia).
Vaginal rejuvenation is one of the fastest-growing procedures according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) with over 5000 procedures performed. Besides changing the aesthetic appearance of the female genitalia, it has many functional benefits, particularly in increased sexual satisfaction.
Internal rejuvenation, or vaginoplasty, tightens the walls of the vagina as well as the introitus (opening of the vagina). After a vaginal birth, the muscles of the vagina stretch and the walls and opening to the vagina become looser. The laxity of the muscles decreases sensation and can reduce sexual pleasure for both the female and male partners.
External rejuvenation, or labiaplasty, is performed for a variety of reasons. Sagging or enlarged labia can be a sexual confidence killer. Labiaplasty reduces the size or changes the shape of the labia minora making them smaller or correcting asymmetry. Some women are born with enlarged labia and some have experienced stretching of the labia after childbirth. Most women experience better sexual self-esteem after labiaplasty.
Women need not feel embarrassed to seek vaginal rejuvenation. Better awareness of the procedure through articles and blogs such as this are helping to demystify the procedures and women are embracing the procedure in growing numbers.
