Most Moms wouldn’t change a thing about having a baby. What they would change, however, is their post baby body. Pregnancy is beautiful, but the aftermath on a woman’s body is less than attractive for some new moms. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has revealed a surprising new statistic: 62% of mothers seek plastic surgery to get their pre-baby figures back.
A Mommy Makeover is a combination of procedures that restore Mom to pre-baby shape. Patients feel that they can rely on plastic surgery to not only give them safe and effective results, but also to give them back the confidence in their appearance than they had pre-baby.
These are four of the most common components of a typical Mommy Makeover performed at Changes Plastic Surgery & Spa.
Breast Augmentation / Breast Lift
The engorgement of the breasts with milk and subsequent nursing can leave the breasts deflated and sagging. Some women are simply fine with just lifting the breasts back to normal anatomic position with a breast lift (mastopexy). Others opt for the insertion of breast implants along with mastopexy to regain their breast shape or simply to add to their natural breast size.
The weight gain associated with pregnancy, the loosening of the skin and stretch marks, are a major concern for moms. After birth, the skin of the stomach may be left loose with sagging excess skin. Furthermore, expansion of the abdominal muscles in pregnancy can cause the rectus abdominis muscles to separate (rectus diastasis). A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is performed in order to remove the excess skin and reattach the abdominal muscles. Stretch marks can now be treated with lasers.
As a busy new mom with excess added weight from pregnancy, exercise is hard to fit in. Dr. Gilbert Lee and Dr. Brian Reagan typically recommend flank liposuction in order to sculpt the “muffin top” and improve the overall body contour after pregnancy. Inner and outer thigh liposuction is often suggested as well.
The muscles of the vagina are most affected by childbirth causing a loosening the vaginal canal and muscles of the pelvis. Vaginoplasty surgically tightens the vagina and makes it smaller (narrower). Multiple pregnancies may also cause a significant permanent enlargement of the labia minora. Many issues accompany enlarged minora including a personal dislike in appearance and other functional issues such as pain during intercourse. Labiaplasty surgically removes the excess and hanging skin of the labia. Feminine rejuvenation procedures are not just for moms as the American Society of Plastic Surgery reports a 44% increase in these procedures since 2013.
Dr. Lee and Dr. Reagan are highly skilled at performing any and all of the procedures combined in a Mommy Makeover. Because multiple procedures are done in one surgery, the Mommy Makeover is essentially “bundled” to reduce the start up fees involved in scheduling multiple surgeries. The down time is significant requiring approximately 6 weeks for full recovery.
