Dr. Lee Discusses Men & Plastic Surgery
For years, women have taken advantage of the physical and psychological benefits of elective plastic surgery. The name “cosmetic surgery” seems to imply that these procedures are only for women. On the contrary, it has become increasingly popular for men to pursue cosmetic surgery. Men, as well as women feel cosmetic surgery can enhance career, as well as personal success through the improvements created by plastic surgery.
Male Facial Surgery
Cosmetic procedures such as eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and facial implants are performed essentially the same way for men and women. Dr. Lee can make recommendations for ways to give a more masculine look to your facial features, for example a more pronounced chin, stronger cheekbones, or a sleeker nose. Many men find that chin implants combined with neck liposuction, and/or a necklift can create the strong jawline and profile that are traditional male physical characteristics.
Common Surgical Facial Procedures for Men
- Eyelid Surgery – Restoring a more youthful facial appearance begins with treating the eyelids. Drooping upper eyelids and under eye bags can be make the entire face appear older. Blepharoplasty is the surgical procedure to remove sagging upper lid skin and smooth and tighten the lower lids. The procedure is performed under local anesthetic and you can return to work in approximately 7 days.
- Rhinoplasty – Nose surgery also known as rhinoplasty can restore balance to the facial features. Some men desire to straighten a crooked nose, remove a dorsal hump, shorten the tip or narrow the base and other aesthetic changes. Breathing can be improved with septoplasty in the case of a deviated septum. Rhinoplasty serves to correct and enhance the nose by giving it better proportion to other facial features.
- Facial Implants – Severe hollowing under the eyes can be a result of fat loss through aging or it can be caused by an anatomical condition called tear trough deformity. Tear Trough Implants are surgically placed in the void between the lower lid and receded cheek bone to bring the area into the light and restores a youthful eye to cheek contour. The process of aging actually causes bone to recede which can have some men wondering why their chin appears weak and the jawline less defined. For some men, they were simply born with a weak chin. Ideally, in profile, a straight vertically line drawn from the forehead should touch the chin. A chin implant can be surgically placed through a small incision just under the chin to improve the imbalance of a small chin and provide better proportion.
- Neck Lift/Liposuction – Loss of skin elasticity occurs as we age resulting in sagging neck and facial skin and the development of jowls. A neck lift surgically removes sagging neck skin and is usually performed in conjuction with a face lift. A corset platysmaplasty surgically repairs the appearance of vertical neck bands or cords. In addition, excess fat in the neck can be treated with liposuction to eliminate a double chin.
Liposuction / Body Contouring
The ideal male body shape is considered to be trim and athletic-looking, with a “V” shape of the broad shoulders and chest, a flat abdomen, and a narrower hip-thigh area. However, as men age, areas of fat tend to accumulate around the abdomen, the flanks (“love handles”), and along the chin and neck.
Liposuction can be a very effective treatment to remove these fatty areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. Usually Ultrasound Assisted Lipectomy (UAL) is used to melt the fat from the fibrous tissues of the trunk.
For men who have hanging abdominal skin (usually the result of a large amount of weight loss), loose abdominal muscles, and/or neglected hernias, an abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” produces the best results. This is a more extensive surgical procedure than liposuction because in addition to the removal of excess stomach fat, excess skin is surgically excised. The incision is made below the belly button so it is hidden when going shirtless. Because of the nature of this procedure, the recovery period is longer. Liposuction of the flanks is typically performed at the same time to better contour the waistline.
In cases of massive weight loss when a large amount of excess skin is to be removed, a beltlipectomy may be recommended. In this procedure, the incision for an abdominoplasty is continued circumferentially around the trunk. This allows the surgeon to excise draping skin in the back as well as the abdomen.
Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
“Gynecomastia” is the medical term for benign enlargement of the male breast tissue. Approximately 40% to 60% of men are affected by this, and the condition can be quite disconcerting for men, who feel embarrassed and self conscious about their enlarged breast size. Excess male breast tissue (sometimes referred to as man boobs) can easily be reduced with Ultrasound Assisted Lipectomy to correct it.
UAL has many advantages over traditional liposuction for this condition. UAL gives smoother more complete fat removal with less swelling and bruising than traditional liposuction. This surgery involves the removal of fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts. In extreme cases, skin is removed as well. The effect is a flatter, firmer and more contoured chest. Because the fat is permanently removed from that area, the results are permanent.
