LASERS in Plastic Surgery:
What is a Laser?
The word "laser" is actually an acronym that refers to "Light Amplification for the Stimulated Emission of Radiation." Laser light is a targeted and controlled light energy that can be used in various intensities and durations for non-surgical skin resurfacing, hair removal, and to treat spider veins. Laser technology has continued to evolve since it was introduced for cosmetic enhancements.
There are two types of Laser resurfacing: ablative and non-ablative.
Ablative skin resurfacing uses a powerful laser to remove outer layers of skin and to promote the regrowth of younger, smoother skin. Non-ablative skin resurfacing uses a very gentle laser, which treats the deeper layers of skin while leaving the outer skin surface intact. This non-ablative laser requires multiple treatments with slower, subtler improvements. There is little to no downtime or recovery associated with the non-ablative laser.
Both forms use short-pulses of light to affect the heating of targeted tissues, and then immediate rapid cooling. The amount and duration of laser exposure determines the aggressiveness of the treatment, and the extent of its results.
