Facial Implant Procedures
What are Facial Implants?
Balance and proportion are two of the most distinct characteristics of facial beauty. These characteristics are illustrated by high, defined cheekbones, a smooth, seamless contour of the lower lid and cheek, and a pronounced yet proportional chin, which help to give the face attractive angles and contours. If you weren’t born with these facial features, they can be achieved through the use of facial implants.
Implants have been tested and used successfully for years. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes to be compatible with your frame and to produce the desired look you want. Though the results can be dramatic, the implants look very natural.
Depending on the patient’s needs, often times facial implants are used in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure such as facelift, eyelid or nose surgery and/or non-surgical methods, such as collagen injections around the mouth, to give the most balanced effects. Unless the implant is removed, these results are permanent.
These procedures are performed by your triple board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Gilbert Lee, who has been voted by the San Diego Medical Society "Top Doctor" for the past 6 years running. Read more about Dr. Lee's qualifications on his CV.
Tear Trough Implants
Tear Trough Implants are used to correct a condition known as tear trough deformity and/or to eliminate dark circles under the eyes. A tear trough deformity is a deep indentation between the eye and the nose. Technically known as the nasojugal fold, this natural indentation becomes very noticeable if it gets too deep. Some people have tear troughs naturally (see Negative Vector Orbit), while others develop them with aging. Either way, it creates a dark shadow which is cosmetically distracting. A Flowers Tear Trough Implant inserted under the eyes will augment the cheek bone (infraorbital rim) and eliminate the shadowing. This is the most lasting and predictable treatment for tear trough deformity.
Tear trough implants are made of silicone – a soft rubber-like material that is inserted through a small incision and placed over the bone mass under the eyelid to augment its shape and create a more youthful appearance. Dr. Lee performs tear trough implant surgery with a small incision just beneath the lower lashes. By using this advanced surgical technique, there are no visible signs of scarring since there is no incision made on the outside of the eyelid. Transconjunctival tear trough implant surgery has a quicker healing time post-surgery than less effective surgical techniques and leaves no change to the shape of the eyelid.

Chin and Cheek Augmentation
Cheek Implants (Malarplasty)
Despite a skillful use of cosmetics, it is difficult to create contours where there are none. A permanent way to achieve high and pronounced cheekbones is through the use of cheek implants.
Cheek augmentation can have dramatic results by adding contrasts to a long, narrow or to an overly round face. This can create the soft angles and contrasts that are so sought-after.
Cheek implants are placed on top of the cheekbone through an incision made usually inside the mouth, thus keeping the incision scar hidden. During the procedure, a "pocket" is created into which the implant is inserted. This helps anchor the implant in place. During the recovery process, there may be some discomfort during talking and eating, but this dissipates with time.
Chin Implants (Mentoplasty)
Chin implants are usually inserted through a small incision made under the chin. As with all incisions, there will be some bruising and swelling. For most patients, these only last for a few days after surgery, with a very small incision scar.

Prior to any surgery, a complete medical history will be taken, along with a careful examination to evaluate your general health. You and Dr. Lee will discuss the best types of anesthesia to be used, how the procedure works, your anticipated results, and the possible risks. You can preview your results through state-of-the art digital imaging. During your subsequent pre-operative visit, you will receive preoperative instructions, so you will know your role in creating the most advantageous surgical outcome.
Sutures are usually removed within one week. Discomfort associated with the surgery can usually be alleviated with medication prescribed for you. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection. Some temporary swelling and bruising of the face are to be expected; however, keeping the head slightly elevated when reclining and applying cold compresses may help reduce swelling. Chewing may be difficult for about two weeks, and tightness or numbness around the treated area may occur for a short while. Brushing your teeth is often difficult for several days.
Complications or infection are rare but following your surgeon’s instructions will make a significant difference in your recovery.
Dr. Gilbert Lee is a triple-board certified plastic surgeon and the procedures are performed in a state licensed and Medicare certified surgical center, along with skilled anesthesiologists. These credentials help ensure the highest standards of care and your utmost safety.
