Chin and Cheek Augmentation are Facial Implant Procedures at Changes Plastic Surgery

What is Chin and Cheek Augmentation?

Balance and proportion are two of the most distinct characteristics of facial beauty. These characteristics are illustrated by high, defined cheekbones and a pronounced yet proportional chin, which help to give the face attractive angles and contours.

If you weren’t born with these facial features, they can be achieved through the use of chin and/or cheek implants.

Implants have been tested and used successfully for years. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes to be compatible with your frame and to produce the desired look you want. Though the results can be dramatic, the implants look very natural.

Depending on the patient’s needs, often times facial implants are used in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure such as facelift, eyelid or nose surgery and/or non-surgical methods, such as collagen injections around the mouth, to give the most balanced effects. Unless the implant is removed, these results are permanent.

Cheek Implants (Malarplasty)

Despite a skillful use of cosmetics, it is difficult to create contours where there are none. A permanent way to achieve high and pronounced cheekbones is through the use of cheek implants.

Cheek augmentation can have dramatic results by adding contrasts to a long, narrow or to an overly round face. This can create the soft angles and contrasts that are so sought-after.

Cheek implants are placed on top of the cheekbone through an incision made usually inside the mouth, thus keeping the incision scar hidden. During the procedure, a "pocket" is created into which the implant is inserted. This helps anchor the implant in place. During the recovery process, there may be some discomfort during talking and eating, but this dissipates with time.

Chin Implants (Mentoplasty)

Chin implants are usually inserted through a small incision made under the chin. As with all incisions, there will be some bruising and swelling. For most patients, these only last for a few days after surgery, with a very small incision scar.

Many men find that chin implants combined with neck liposuction, and/or a necklift can create the strong jawline and profile that are traditional male physical characteristics.

Potential Risks

All of the Changes surgeons are board-certified plastic surgeons, and the procedures are performed in a state licensed and Medicare certified surgical center, along with skilled anesthesiologists. These credentials help ensure the highest standards of care and your utmost safety.

Before Surgery

Prior to any surgery, a complete medical history will be taken, along with a careful examination to evaluate your general health. You and your plastic surgeon will discuss the best types of anesthesia to be used, how the procedure works, your anticipated results, and the possible risks. You can preview your results through state-of-the art digital imaging. During your subsequent pre-operative visit, you will receive preoperative instructions, so you will know your role in creating the most advantageous surgical outcome.

Following Surgery

Sutures are usually removed within one week. Discomfort associated with the surgery can usually be alleviated with medication prescribed by your surgeon. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection. Some temporary swelling and bruising of the face are to be expected; however, keeping the head slightly elevated when reclining and applying cold compresses may help reduce swelling. Chewing may be difficult for about two weeks, and tightness or numbness around the treated area may occur for a short while. Brushing your teeth is often difficult for several days.

Complications or infection are rare but following your surgeon’s instructions will make a significant difference in your recovery.
